Meet Nyakim Gatwech, the African American model of South Sudanese heritage who is helping to dispel the notion that people should be terrified of the dark. The model with dark skin is breaking through the constraints of traditional beauty with her highly colored complexion and her fiery drive, and she is urging others to do the same.
This African model and fashion star, who is 24 years old and currently resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota, does not feel any guilt regarding her melanin, and she makes sure that the rest of the world is aware of this. “The sophistication of my chocolate. And this is what I stand for… She captioned one of her many Instagram images with the phrase “A country of fighters,” and each of her photos consistently receives more than 10,000 likes apiece. In another, she describes an incident in which an Uber driver advised her to “bleach” her complexion, to which she could only respond with laughter. In this account, she says that she ignored the driver’s advice. “You won’t believe the kinds of questions people ask me and the stares they give me because of my skin,” said the woman with dark skin.
Not only does Gatwech work to promote diversity in the fashion industry, but she also acts as a voice for the rights of black people all over the world. She has even been given the title “Queen of Darkness,” which is a moniker that she gladly adopts. “Black is audacious, black is gorgeous, and black is gold… Be careful not to allow the standards of the United States destroy your African spirit. Be grateful for the skin you’re in, no matter what color or tone it is!

24-year-old Nyakim Gatwech is making waves in the fashion industry with her sumptuously dark skin

Before the South Sudanese model found success, though, her unique beauty wasn’t celebrated by all

In 2016, an Uber driver suggested she bleach her skin, implying that her deep complexion was nothing to love

She simply responded with laughter, and has fully embraced her striking appearance ever since

“My chocolate is elegant. So is what I represent… A nation of warriors,” she captioned an Instagram photo

Now living in Minneapolis, Nyakim is a voice of encouragement for the Black community

“You are beyond beautiful and the love I have for you is unconditional because you are me,” she wrote

“Let’s show the world how beautiful and intelligent we are apart from just being dark skinned”
