This Abandoned Shopping Mall In Bangkok Has Been Taken Over By Fish

Unexpectedly, thousands of fish live within this shuttered mall in Bangkok, Thailand, and are allowed to freely cruise its wet floor. After a fire destroyed its roof in 1999, the mall was forced to close its doors in 1997. The mall quickly became submerged in water during the rainy season, which made the place ideal for an invasion of mosquitoes. The residents came up with a brilliant solution to get rid of them by breeding freshwater catfish and koi fish in the mall’s water so they could consume the insects.

One of the largest natural aquariums in the world is currently hidden in the mall. Jesse Rockwell, a professional photographer, writer, and cook, went to this mall to take some pictures that depict the land being reclaimed by nature like in a disaster film.

“Without a good knowledge of Bangkok geography, one would be hard pressed to believe anything interesting lies behind this gate”, writes James on his blog.
“At some point in the early 2000′s an unknown person began introducing a small population of exotic Koi and Catfish species. The small population of fish began to thrive and the result is now a self-sustained, and amazingly populated urban aquarium”– James explains in his blog.
